Plague is not a stranger to mankind. One of the earliest plague records is as old as 3000 BC from Babylon. The association of the plague with rats is mentioned in ‘Bhagwat Purana which was written 1500-800 BC.29 the first truly convincing written evidence of plague appeared in 542 AD, called as ‘Justinian plague’. The second pandemic started in 1860 and spread to all major ports of the world via trade routes.
