Foodborne diseases are a problem of great magnitude present worldwide; it causes tremendous human suffering and big economic costs. It causes morbidity and mortality in developed as well as developing countries. Most foodborne diseases are missed and go unreported. The data by passive surveillance systems (healthcare system in India) only represent the tip of the iceberg, and a major bulk of disease is the submerged portion and is not represented in the data. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that cases of foodborne diseases notified are only 10% in developed countries and 1% in developing countries.
